Welcome to the 3rd and final installment of my Scarab rebuild thread. I dunno how many of you have asked just where Scarabs come from. You have to be a pretty keen Halo groupie to know the answer. Drum roll please... Scarab's are dropped from low orbit by Covenant capital ships. The second pic is of the bottom of the Scarab's hull where you can see the four anti-grav repulso (?) engines I added and which the Scarab uses to slow its descent and land "softly". Who knew, right?
The MB design teams' efforts with the energy core room were... ummm... pretty unremarkable for a Signature set. Well its pretty hard to go wrong here when you start with essentially nothing! I pushed the energy core wall towards the front of the Scarab by one stud to give my detail work some room to breath. Then I detailed the room using screen grabs. Once I had that sorted I wanted to make the energy core room's rearward facing armor assembly detachable. This is the piece of purple armor with the flashing red beacon on it. During the Hornet vs 2 Scarab battle in the Halo 3 campaign mission, you used missiles and cannon fire to shoot away this piece of the Scarab so as to gain access to their cores while flying the Hornet. This little mod would considerably improve the model's play worthiness.
Once I'd removed the 2x10 silver plate which connected the armor assembly to the roof, I did a minor rebuild of the armor assembly which included removing the bottom 2x4 purple plate on the armor where it attached to the deck below to support the new attachment method. That 2x4 plate is replaced by a pair of 2x2 tiles attached to the deck in the same spot. Next I reinforced and added to all the wall-to-roof joints up top so that the build's stability was no longer contingent upon the support of the rear armor assembly. Finally I crafted a spring loaded attachment using a 4x6 plate in place of the longer 2x10 silver plate which originally anchored the armor assembly and roof together. The new mounting works brilliantly, holding the armor snugly in place until you grab the base of the armor and swing it out and up to detach it.
Yes, the hatch-like purple protuberances on each side of the Scarab clearly exist and yes, the MB design team did an admirable job recreating those outer hatches. No, said hatches most certainly do not pop open in-game to reveal hidden closet-like Jackal sniper perches! However the doors can be blown off in-game with concentrated fire, which reveals side entrances to the lower deck. Note the 1x1 silver L brackets on either side of the hatch. These prevent the otherwise too-loose hatch design from constantly falling open.
Well that wraps up my three part Gallery extravaganza! Well I hope you all enjoyed this beat of a build thread. Rebuilding the Scarab so as to satisfy my (admittedly obsessive) sensibilities was a beast of a project! There were several occasions when I wondered whether it would ever be properly completed. Well as always, please feel free to constructively critique, compliment, or clone my design ideas. Your input is always welcome!
