In times of war, soldiers will often put the soldiers weapon barrel down in the dirt (or whatever the ground is) with their helmets on the stock of the rifle, this is seen in Halo: The Life (We Are ODST), I do not know if this is something that happens in real life, to my knowledge, bodies are recovered and they have a proper funeral
Edit: @Guiltyspark22 knew. Thanks! So, yes, it does happen in real life and, in their words
“When body’s aren’t retrievable they mostly grab the soldiers dog tags. So it would be more common to see a special ops team or other special forces leave the dead body. And in World War One they didn’t do anything but take dog tags until certain groups would come and get any retrievable body’s or they mark a field with crosses for everyone who would’ve died.”
I did edit one part, everything else was written by them, again, many thanks, @Guiltyspark22
