I've never played any of the CoD games so I don't know what any of the in game factions are. I made up my own factions based off helmet types. There are also some named characters with helmets or bare heads.
Do you make your own Factions or Teams or use ones from the games? How do you divide up the Factions?

I've created my own organization ('s) that have no relation to the COD games.

My primary organization is a PMC (PRIVATE MILITARY COMPANY) or as I like to call them mercenaries . The organization's name is Scythian (a subsidiary of Scyth8an Inc.). It2s run by 2 individuals but one may soon be deserting the team as he discovers shades of gray in its business practices and his partners core beliefs.

Its Agents start out as helmeted units (I use the COD tactical helmet with mouth guard as the base unit helmet). Specialist have the COD gas mask helmets. More experienced Agents will use the COD tactical helmets with mouths exposed (the one that come's with the desert troopers pack). I view them as units who would be in command if non helmeted characters aren't around . Kind of like Cobra Officers from gi joe mythos.

Last but not least I have scores of non helmeted custom characters of varying ethnicities reflecting the companies recruitment of agents worldwide.

I've not yet decided if Im going to use the Juggernauts I have as heavily armored base security / assault agents or if I'm going to use them as counter organization that rivals Scythian. The juggernauts look like great troops but a PMC isn't an army and doesn't strike me as an organization type that has those types of heavily armored agents.

Then of course there is the issue of the halo ODST troops that I need to incorporate lol.

In my CoD universe (which is separate from the Halo scale Mash-Up Universe) the Factions are like this:
Private Military Contractors = the guys with caps and sunglasses
Marine Force Recon = The guys with the tactical helmets and exposed mouths
Steel Brigade = The guys with tactical helmets and covered mouths
C.O.I.L. = The guys with mask and goggles
Night Force = The guys with night vision goggles (masked or helmet heads)
Spetsnaz = The guys with gas mask (masked or helmet heads)
ARES Corp = The guys with the exoskeleton supports lead by ARES (Greek for MARS) Corp owner/CEO Destro
Delta Unit = Lead by Joe Colton (Mason head) these are the bare head, beret heads, boonie hat heads, knit cap heads, the ghillie suit guy and the helicopter version of Ghost
Various Mercs = Zartan, Juggernaut, Fireball (a.k.a. Beta Man from Eagle Force), Viper, The Unknown Soldier, Cutter, Scorpion and any other custom guys I come up with that don't fit with another Faction.
Zombies = There are Super Zombies (Brutus), Toxic Zombies (Hazmat) that do more damage, Red Eyed Zombies that move faster and Blue Eyed Zombies that are the majority
DefenseNet = Near AI that controls Drones as well as automated gun and missile emplacements

Not surprisingly it seems like you have a lot of GI Joe influence 'Bob.

IS one Faction dominant with regard to its agenda ala Cobra?

Oh yes ... tons of G.I. Joe influence. Especially since this CoD line is like getting to relive the early Joe years (ARAH years that is) all over again.

In a table top war gaming perspective the factions are really there just to add a little flavor to the Operators in the draft pool. Players can pick and choose, mix and match any factions they want (except for Zombie and DefenseNet). Named characters have a better skill dice (D8 or D10) and some have additional abilities to make them better but also cost more points. Generic characters, such as Spetsnaz 3, just have the basic skill dice (D6) but still have access to good equipment and cost fewer points.

In a story perspective most of the factions are pretty equal. Spetsnaz, Steel Brigade, Night Force, PMC and Force Recon all have about the same number of members with equipment making up some the differences. The Zombies have more members but are only effective in herds/swarms. DefenseNet has hard to kill drones that can put out heavy firepower but it has a limited range of control and if its relay towers are taken out that range decreases. ARES Corp has fewer members (currently until those jet pack guys and Wraiths show up in my local market) but they are the only ones that have access to the exoskeletons and advanced weaponry. The Various Mercs aren't really a team but just a place holder for some characters. Not all of them are "bad" guys either. The Unknown Soldier (or the yet to be made Punisher) will show up to help out Force Recon or Delta Unit if needed. The only stand out faction is Delta Unit (G.I. Joe ARAH and all named characters) but since their only ally faction is Force Recon they need to stand out as they could easily get overwhelmed if the other factions (except Force Recon) united against them.

Since my CoD Universe is happening during a Zombie and AI apocalypse, there really isn't a "Cobra" out for world domination. Survival and getting to supplies before the other factions is the more pressing concern.

My factions are generally based by outfit style - usually along the lines of what we already have, I have my Arctic Foxes, Desert Vipers, my jungle faction, and my SEALs as my larger specialized factions. As there are a lot of tan/brown outfitted figures I have an antagonist faction based in those tones.

The few Atlas Troopers (I think, the sci fi ones) are another antagonist faction who, to make things even more interesting hav7e programmed certain skeletal shaped robots from another franchise to work with them.

I've also used zombie heads to make Fallout style ghouls, and WoW heads to add in some Shadowrun inspiration.

A few Assassin's Creed hoods make for good "mysterious wanderer" sorts too. The cream colored hood especially works well with the cream colored astronauts.

A lot of the "named" and "unique" figures are either parts of their own faction or standalone merc types. I also have a fair number of groups of three that do their own things.

Mine is set in a semi-post-apoc realm where fantastical creatures and beings are coming back into vogue - primary antagonists are the old dragons from the original Dragons line.

I've got an almost complete line of Dragons Universe dragons that I really want to use in a diorama. They are incredible and deserve to be showcased. If mattel releases an MOTU MEGA BLOKS linen they will see extensive use .

Maybe I'll just use 1 as a genetically manufactured creature .
