Shaleback Spider – a subterranean super-predator that has been the subject of all manner of myths, the Shaleback Spider is a denizen of The Chasm that occasionally makes its way up to the surface to hunt. Said to emerge only on the darkest and coldest of nights, this creature has been blamed for all manner of disappearances and disasters in isolated areas.
The Shaleback Spider is believed to be blind, instead relying on other senses to locate its prey. It’s powerful pincers said to be strong enough to crush solid steel, and it’s believed to tunnel through the ground by chewing its way through dirt and rock with its jaws. Minerals from the rock it consumes are distributed throughout its carapace, forming a stone-like shell as durable as tank armour. Attempts to hunt the creature have invariably ended in failure.
