Fireteam Vibe- Chapter 10- Section 3
“Everyone check in,” Nigel whispered.
“Vibe two at the wall,” Tabrizi said.
“Vibe five approaching now,” Diesel reported.
“Vibe three has been here for ten minutes already,” Amanda cracked.
Mari said nothing. “Vibe four?” Still nothing. “Kimm?!” “Yeah guys, um I’m almost there, and I’m bringing a friend,” Mari said nervously. “Have you been spotted?” Nigel asked. “Well, sorta...” Mari replied.
“Is it a Grunt?” Nigel thought maybe the little guys could’ve heard her footsteps. “No,” she said.
“A Jackal?” They could’ve smelled her. “Uh-uh,” she was obviously freaked out.
“Elite?” They were smart. Could’ve spotted the spatial distortion. “Nope,” she squeaked. Heavy footsteps sounded as a Hunter lumbered around the corner. Standing at 16 feet tall, the hulking colony of worms towered over the crouched Spartans. His brother followed slowly behind him. They warbled and groaned deeply, their green eyes staring at the Spartans. Nigel thought they were just going to continue to stare at them, but they actually spoke. “The demons... you are here,” they said in unison. This really freaked Nigel out. He had never heard Hunters speak. He didn’t even know they could. In a low whisper he asked, “How did they know we were here?” The pair responded, “Your feelings... we could sense.” They could hear him. More unsettling. “Well,” Nigel continued, “You gonna shoot us?” The Hunters warbled again and asked, “A threat... do you pose?” Nigel answered, “You would know. We Spartans have a reputation. Why haven’t you killed us already?” The Hunters replied, “The Covenant... they will fail. Departing... we contemplate.” This was intriguing. Nigel always assumed Hunters had their own agenda, but he was actually witnessing a pair thinking of defecting. “All I can say is you better come to decision real quick, or you are going die here.” The Hunters stood motionless and silent for two whole minutes. Nigel wondered if they had gone into a coma. They finally spoke. “To the wilds... we go. The demons... we thank.” With that, they lumbered off in no particular direction, leaving the Spartans alone.
