Finally! I finished the fight! So excited to share with you what I've been working on.
Why: This Halo 3 pelican was inspired by Pelican Inbound and of course Halo 3. I always love building with Lego as a child and then later of course Halo. My older brother had got me a couple Halo mega sets a few years back which were fun but I wasn’t buying more as all my lego stuff is packed up in boxes. Then Mega release pelican inbound on sale, around the time Halo infinite was being delayed, instead of released. It was such a nice set and good value, I felt like in needed it to fill that infinite Halo void inside me.... After building it with my 4 year old son (who loves it, and spent 8 hours with me building it), I couldn’t help but feel that it wasn’t right for a pelican to have only 2 seats, especially when my warthog seats 3 counting gunner.
So that lead me to thinking, “Maybe I can just make the cargo bay a little wider, making room for some more seats...” The need for more bricks of course followed, and with the other ideas I had for improvement I decided a full remodel was necessary and I set a goal of making a Halo 3 accurate pelican out of 2 pelican inbound. In the end i used some parts from 2 builder boxes, 8 additional seats, 1 led string light, and 2 click pen springs.
Result: So after many hours, prayers, and much thankfulness for Halo theater mode free cam, this is my custom built Halo 3 pelican. And a list of some features.
1. Seats 10 in cargo bay, with weapon holders between seats, grab bars and storage rack.
2. 2 seat cockpite, with AI terminal, accurate step bars for co pilot. (grab bar for seat missing in pictures I forgot to put it back on...
3. 100% retractable warthog holder.
4. LED lit interior bay and caulk pit (my friend was teasing me about my attention to detail and said, “is it going to have a bathroom and lights!?” I showed him the bathroom would be non cannon but I really like his idea for lights.
5. Accurate and functional cargo bay ramp with window (window can open separately)
6. Cosmetic rear landing gear (they cant hold the 7.7 lbs on their own...) And retractable pivoting functional front landing gear. Also a set of wheels instead of clear pieces makes for fun driving
7. Removable top for play, I really like how the inbound one splits but chose not to work that in...
8. I made some compromised in the shape, not slanting the cargo bay walls, which led to not tapering the top middle of roof, and some details and proportions are out of scale.
Conclusion: About 1/3 the way through building this I realized it would take a lot more time than I was expecting, (not that I was expecting it to be quick). In the end it took more time than I was originally planning but less than I had thought half way through... I’m pretty happy with this and have no regret, maybe a few ideas for improvement still, but very happy and hope you all enjoy it too. I do want to make instructions SOME DAY, but not likely this year.
