The main gates fell open with a loud clang. The operations supervisor entered and said, “It really took you that long to get through a fence?”
“Well Captain,” a rather large tattooed man replied, “maybe if you have us professional equipment instead of our bare hands, we could’ve been in there faster.” The captain scoffed, “You were enhanced to be stronger and smarter. I expected more.” The captain’s power armor clanked as she walked past the two men. “I’m sorry we disappointed you ma’am,” the other soldier said. “No you’re not. You don’t have emotions.” She gazed into the complex, “Kill anything in here that doesn’t look like it belongs in a biology book, then report back to me.”
The two responded with a, “Yes ma’am,” and moved into the zoo. “She says we don’t have emotions,” the tattooed one scoffed.
Meanwhile...
Netgaris continued to lead the monkeys through the maze of passageways. “I remember as a child thinking that the back of zoo would be filled with equipment and food. Seeing all of these gray hallways is disappointing.” “Speaking of gray hallway,” Flig said, “They all look same. We going in circles?” Netgaris stopped at a four way junction. “No we aren’t. The exit is right this way.” He turned left, but before the monkeys could follow, he exited the left passage and went right, “Or this way.” This time he opened a door and light flooded in. “Ah! Here we are!”
The monkeys blinked as their eyes hit sunlight for the first time. Grub inhaled fresh, unfiltered air. “Me can see why you humans like outside so much,” he said. Netgaris nodded, “Indeed!” Though Grub couldn’t see it, Netgaris was smiling behind his hood. Suddenly Netgaris froze, then said, “Quickly, back inside.” “What? Why?” Palf asked, annoyed. “Just go!” Netgaris replied urgently. They all ran back in, and Netgaris closed the door, leaving it open just enough to peer out. After a minute or so, two men walked past the door. One was covered in markings, the monkeys called him, “Mark.” The other had hair all over his face, so they called him “Harry.” Once the men had passed completely, Netgaris let the monkeys out. “Was they those US... UR... SN... those bad people?!” Tan stammered. “Yes they are,” Netgaris replied. “Wow! How did you hear them coming from so far away?!” Flig asked. “My only useful mutant power,” Netgaris answered, “I can hear long distances.” “What’s the other power?” Grub asked. Netgaris sighed, “I’ll tell you in time. For now, we need to move.”
