“We found them shortly after sunrise, a half-dozen of our guys, guns in their hands, their campfire still smouldering.
At first, we thought it was just a raid gone wrong. Maybe they took some hostages back to camp, they broke loose, turned the tables on their captors. It happens sometimes. Even the best of the Vintage Highwaymen can sometimes bite off more than they can chew.
But then another of our camps failed to report in. And another. And another. And another. Dozens of our men… gone.
We sent some scouts over to known Axis Highwayman camps, assuming they were the ones responsible for the attacks… but it was the same thing there. I don’t know how many of them are left. I don’t even know how many of our guys are left.
I know what you’re probably thinking. Someone did you all a favour by taking out our guys. The roads will be safer without the highwaymen prowling around. But ask yourself this: if whoever did this was really your friend, why haven’t they come forward? Why has no one taken credit for these attacks? The answer seems pretty obvious to me. Whoever did this… they’re not done yet.”
Interview with surviving Vintage Highwayman, recorded two days after the attacks.

Welcome back to Wasteland, everyone! For those who missed my announcement last year, I’ll be taking over running Wasteland, using the notes Nigel shared with me before he withdrew from the site. This means I’ll be taking a bit of a break from my regular Wasteland comics to focus more on these narrative prompts, which are designed to advance the story while offering jumping-off points for other Wasteland writers to respond to and build on.
I plan to release one of these every 2-3 weeks, giving everyone plenty of time to process and respond should they wish. This week, a series of mysterious attacks conducted in a single night have all but wiped out the Vintage and Axis Highwaymen, leaving the survivors scattered. While the roads are now safer for travellers, the identity of the attackers and their future plans remain a mystery.
