Finally! Mega Construx made Slash in series 2 of the Mutagen Canister figures... wait no, they didn't, at least not yet... So I had to do something about that.
I was watching the 1987 TMNT cartoons yesterday, and one of those episodes was the first one with Bebop's pet turtle: Slash. I suddenly realized that I might be able to make him, not exactly as he should be, but close enough to tell that it was Slash.
The pictures give a super brief story of how it happened: Rocksteady poors some super mutagen on Bebop's pet turtle, he grows, is outfitted with armor and such, before getting angry and chasing Bebop and Rocksteady, taking 2 swords belonging to Shredder.
How he was made: yellow torso plate from individual TMNT turtle pack. Shell from standard brown shell (mine was from Donnie Rocksoldier pack). Body and swords from Leo samurai battle pack. Belt from a turtle belt, cutting off the letter, although it didn't end up as smooth as I would have liked. Then I cut one side of the rubber flaps off. Black rubber bands from Raph in the Eastman & Laird Street Showdown set. Shoulder armor from Shredder in the Eastman & Laird Rooftop Combat set, which was filed off till smooth. Headband was a turtle band that I cut off the back parts that hang down, then filed them smooth.
Then came the hard part, or rather the part of customs that I'm not fully comfortably with yet... painting. Silver hammered spray paint for the headband and shoulder armor. Yellow acrylic paint for the toenails and fingernails. I put some Tacky Glue in the left eye hole of the headband, let it dry and then painted it with yellow acrylic paint as well. Not having any purple for the belt, I mixed red and blue, but it didn't end up quite the color I was looking for, but it works. I then went with a slightly blueish color for the center of the belt, white overtop and 2 yellow dots for eyes (he is supposed to have a skull with 2 yellow eyes on the belt buckle, but that just didn't work at all for me.
Not sure how well the paint will hold, as I know I will have to repaint the belt. Paint came off the more I moved Slash around for pictures. I might need some sort of paint sealer. Anyone know what works well?
I have newfound respect and props to those of you who paint these figures. Painting the nails wasn't too bad, but the belt was problematic. I had to paint it on a turtle body that I didn't care about, then after it dried, carefully move it to Slash.
I would have liked to have the spikes on the knee and elbow pads, and gray gloves, but that would have been more trouble than it was worth. The same goes for Slash's buck teeth and toe nails that protrude from his feet (painting seemed adequate for that).
Let me know what you think. If you have any suggestions on how to make it better, suggest away (I'm not sure what to do about the "skull" on the belt). And once again if anyone knows what works well for a paint sealer, I'd appreciate any input.
