“I had collapsed to the ground.
The shot that my helmet had taken had destroyed its power source, immediately ceasing its air-filtering capabilities. Unfiltered air rushed into my lungs, and my body reacted immediately, destroying any cells it reached. I tried to slow my breathing, but found myself hyperventilating as my vision rapidly darkened.
I’m certain that I passed out.
The next thing I remember, I was on a helicopter being airlifted out of there. The twin Little Birds that I believed to be hostile were actually friendlies, the precursors to the CDT. Brendon had flagged them down, lead them to me, and rapidly obtained a spare gas mask. He saved my life, at immeasurable risk of his own.
But I could never return that favor. He was killed, the battle of Sub Harenae. He was my responsibility, under my command.
The CDT never should have gone to Sub Harenae.”
The TIN operative began scrawling on a data-pad. He looked up.
“Specialist Brendon Diez— field medic, marksman, decent amount of hardware to his name?”
“Yes.”
“I recall the name from the casualty report. The CDT needs more like him, not less Left behind a wife and a kid, real tragedy. The file didn’t mention you were close.”
“Then I would say that your files are somewhat out of date.”
“That, Green, is why I am here. To clear up discrepancies. Now with the official business done, it would be my time to leave. As much as I’d like to, I don’t really have time for small talk these day. I’ll update your file, alert Regional Command, and I think that you will be able to secure a little finding for your, uhhh…”
He conferred his data-pad once more then looked up. Sensing his uncertainty, I offered him the name myself. But at the same time, he began to speak. Our voices rang out in unison with the novel phrase,
“Intelligent Life Coalition.”
We shook hands, concluding the encounter, and he packed his things and left.
— So that concludes the story. Sorry for being so late on this last part, I honestly forgot about it. Should be able to go start a new comic fairly soon, but I’ll just have some other miscellaneous content until then! Thanks for reading. —
