Personally, I was never at peace with the Elephant's concept. The halo 3 elephant was a mobile forward base? A mobile bunker? A retrieval vehicle? Whatever it was the high profile bothered me to no end; it was simply a big target and would be vulnerable to aircraft. The Elephant troop carrier did nothing to assuage this unease. Now we have a troop carrier with an excessive amount of head space (that was what, 2 stories high?) and not an impressive amount of troop capacity. Even assuming the troop carrier would be sent into a firefight to deliver troops it just seemed impractical. So I decided to rebuild the Elephant and assign it a role I knew would be the most practical for a very large and slow vehicle.
Rationale:
ELEPHANT SUPPORT BATTERY "LONG TUSK"
When orbital support and Mammoth deployments are just impossible an ELEPHANT "LONG TUSK" is sent in to provide devastating local fire support. The Elephant Support Battery is a modified Elephant Troop Carrier chassis equipped with a Rail Gun that fires 450mm explosive rounds. This weapon can achieve a maximum effective range of up to 90km with a blast radius of 40m. It can fire up to 45 shells every hour before the gun has to recharge and cool its mechanisms.
Field reports have suggested that the "LONG TUSK" is most effective against entrenched hostiles or enemy fortifications sand emplacements such as AA batteries and teleporter spires. Also, because the "LONG TUSK" does not have a horizontal swivel it is ideally deployed in trios where each gun is aimed slightly to the left or to the right of the other.
Being far from combat the only real threat to the "LONG TUSK" was aircraft. It comes equipped with 6 LAAGs and 1 SAM launcher that can fire up to four guided missiles at once. If hostile infantry ever happens upon this vehicle it has enough armor to withstand small and medium arms fire.
