Old_Bolty-Neck caught our attention right away in early 2020 when he started posting custom vehicles and dioramas from Masters of the Universe. Here was a talented builder whose passion for all things MOTU obviously ran deep. His projects took inspiration from across the franchise, including the animated series and of course the classic toy line. He even posted a few original creations that feel so authentically MOTU you’d swear they were canon.
We liked Old_Bolty-Neck’s early projects, but nothing could have prepared us for his massive redesign of the iconic Castle Grayskull. He jokes that he “doesn’t like to follow instructions.” That’s an understatement if we ever heard one! Based on Mark Texeira’s art from the minicomics, Old_Bolty-Neck’s version of “Castle G” is not only bigger than our official model, but also features tons of modifications and additions. From the turrets (with lasers!) to the drawbridge, double balconies, gargoyles, figure lookouts and fire-scorching skull, this castle is absolutely epic.
We reached out to Old_Bolty-Neck to find out more about what drives him. Growing up in the 80s, he says he was “never too far away from a tub of building toys,” and it shows! He loves MOTU because it invites “brightly colored adventure with high-concept characters.”
Old_Bolty-Neck says he begins his custom builds by drawing them out. “This is key,” he says, “because when drawing, I notice details and get a better sense of the project’s proportions.” Then using his drawing as a reference, he just starts putting pieces together.
We asked him what his next big project would be. His answer: the classic 1986 Eternia playset. He’d already created the first of three towers using pieces from Castle Grayskull.
We sent him lots of blue pieces so he could get started on the central tower. Old_Bolty-Neck shared the results a few weeks later. More recently, he completed the final tower, and you can now see how it all comes together.
