Here are the Gen 1 405th Outlander Battalion design guidelines. They are similar to the Gen 2 design guidelines, but notably different.
Figures:
1. Only Elites, Grunts, Jackals, Hunters, ODSTs, and Marines are in the Gen 1 405th. No Spartans, Brutes, or Drones.
2. The figure must use a muted shade of army green as a primary color and a muted shade of earth tan/dark brown as a secondary color (or vice versa)
3. ODSTs and Marines must have a trench coat and night vision goggles or a suitable helmet attachment.. The coat can be made from cloth (Gen 2) or from a Destiny warlock coat (Gen 1). Either Gen can use either style of coat because some of you might not have the parts or the skills with working with fabric
4. The figures must have red prominently displayed somewhere on their armor. This can be either a red scarf or a red stripe on the helmet/chestplate.
5. 405th figures are kitbashed together or pop & swapped together. Painting is recommended, but not strictly necessary if you can make a figure with a cohesive color scheme. ODSTs can use Marine parts and vice versa.
6. Weapons can be kitbashed or standard pieces
7. Unlike Gen 2 405th characters, Gen 1 characters MUST have a combat knife if they are Human. This was due to the Gen 1 story (which is convoluted and mostly no longer canon)
8. Gen 1 405th characters are highly weathered and gritty. This fits the wastelander aesthetic.
405th Gen 1 Vehicle Painting guidelines
1. Before painting, remove all pieces used to indicate lights. Remove the wheels
2A. Paint the wheels black. Paint the wheel rims gunmetal gray
2B. Paint the body/chassis of the vehicle gunmetal gray
3. Paint the parts of the vehicle that aren’t exposed metal a muted shade of tan/brown
4. Use a muted shade of army green to paint on secondary colors
5. Add red stripes as a tertiary detail
6. Add caution strips and other details where appropriate
7. Seal the model with clear sealer
8. Do a silver drybrush over the whole model
9. Do a light blackwash over the whole model
10. Do a mud colored drybrush on the wheels and anywhere else mud would accumulate
11. Reattach the light pieces
For more information about what the 405th Outlander Battalion actually is, see the 405th storyline post I make later this week. All you need to know is that it was a community story project similar to Wasteland that happened a few years ago. The #405thcontest is the grand reintroduction of the story and community project.
