Because it's the most Iconic and basic human weapon from these games. Look on the box art for most of the halo games and the guy will be holding it. Also because it changes in design almost every game.

Why is that a problem? It's standard issue, right? The Reach Assault Rifle is my favorite despite it being the weakest weapon in the game, but hey it looks cool.

Rife on the bottom has two versions one thicker than the other, middle one's previous iteration had no bayonet lug or rails
