After Grey left, Tavira turned to the team.
“What is wrong with you people?! That was a perfectly good mission that you tried to blow off. Rector and Shrubdy, I feel this is par for the course, but Doc I expect more from you!”
Doc shrugged, “Thompson is a danger to others and himself, but has an unnatural ability to cheat death. He doesn’t deserve, nor need, our protection.”
“Maybe so, but that is no reason to mouth off to a superior. What did he even do to you guys?”
Shrubdy piped up, “You mean, besides trying to sell me, Rector, and Monty out to the USRC? He took everything we had and sold it for a position in the Highwaymen.” Rector chimed in, “On top of that, he took over Netgaris’ ship last year. Nobody’s heard from him since. He’s tried to kill us, civilians, and a whole host of others.”
“Tried?”
“Yes well he’s not very good at it.”
Tavira sighed, “Look, I’ll go inform the prisoner of the move, you guys go figure out where I’m hauling him.”
Rector opened his mouth.
“No complaints!”
Rector closed his mouth.
The team walked away, Rector grumbling all the while.
Tavira approached the prison, a shipping container with the top removed. Corporal Green was standing nearby. “You relieving me for today?”
“No, I’m relieving you for a couple weeks.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’ll see. I need to talk to the prisoner.”
“Go on ahead, he’s been unusually quiet today.”
He unlocked the door and pulled it open. In the back corner stood an average sized man with dark black clothes. Upon his head rested a black beanie, and he wore a brown coat. His only other distinguishing mark was an auburn beard. When he saw her he grinned, “Hey. You’re new. Nigel Thompson, what’s your name?”
Tavira cocked an eyebrow, “Tavira Sielke, and I’ve been here for three months.”
“Yeah, but you’ve never visited me. The guards are the only ones that visit me.”
“Well now the circumstances are different.”
“Oh?”
“We are moving you to a safe house.”
Nigel’s grin faltered. He moved to stand directly in front of her.
“What’s happened?”
“Long story short, fighting is getting bad. We don’t want you being abducted.”
Nigel relaxed a little, “Aw... Y’all do care.”
“Only enough to keep you out of enemy hands.”
Nigel clapped his hands together, “Great! Who’s taking me? Green? My old team? Oh please tell me it’s Rector.”
“Me.”
“Oh. Well fantastic! Now we can get to know each other better! This’ll be fun!”
Tavira crossed her arms, “I’m picking you up at 0900 tomorrow.”
Nigel gestured to the empty space, “I’m already packed.”
Tavira didn’t quite know how end this. She was quite put off by how perky he was.
She said, “Um... good,” then left awkwardly.
Tavira stepped out and closed the door. Green adjusted his mask. “How’d he take it?” Tavira scratched her head, “Like I had just told him that I bought him a cake.” Green laughed, “That’s Thompson.” Tavira just shook her head and walked away. Green called after her, “See you tomorrow!”
