Once the two were safely out of the compound, and out of danger, Diesel looked at Roebuck, “Why did you come back?” Roebuck held up three fingers, “Three reasons. One, the USRC is anti-mutant, not anti human. Even though you are a sympathizer, you are still human.” Diesel scoffed, “So are mutants, technically.” Roebuck grimaced, “Let’s not get into that right now. Reason number two, whether the USRC likes it or not, the CDT does a lot of good for our people, as well as mutants, and I wouldn’t want to take you away from New Paso right before winter hits.” Diesel smirked, “Well thanks.” Roebuck sighed, “Finally, number three, I’m not really bought and sold on the whole ‘mutants are a disease that must be purged’ thing.”
Diesel was slightly stunned by this revelation. “You’re... not?”
Roebuck shook his head, “No. That’s what the paranoid generals of brass are spewing. You may have noticed that most of the Mutants in New Paso end up in work camps instead of being executed.” Diesel thought about this. He was right, she’d heard less horror stories about mutant discrimination in New Paso, than anywhere else. “In my opinion,” Roebuck continued, “I’m kinda with Nato. I think Mutants have become a new species. We should treat them as sentient beings, but they shouldn’t be treated like humans.” Diesel was amazed. A Captain of the USRC, who follows Nato?!
“I’m impressed. My opinion of you just rose,” Diesel replied. Roebuck rolled his eyes, “I’m honored.” A sign approached on the side of the road, it read: “Now leaving Tucson, Arizona. Come back soon!”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Diesel said, gesturing at the sign. “We must have been drugged,” Roebuck added. Diesel sat back a little, “Better get comfortable. We are obviously going to be driving awhile.” They were silent for a few moments before Roebuck asked an important question, “Does this truck have a map?”
That’s a wrap! The last book of Season 1 is done! I’m going to upload a epilogue, and an outro, and then “Wasteland: Waking Up” will officially be over! I’ll do a big speech when I post the epilogue.
