Tavira Sielke stretched and groaned. Since she’d replaced David Tabrizi in running Recon Team Delta, they’d barely had any missions. Diesel had put her in charge, and then essentially benched the team. Considering Tavira was once in Naval Intelligence, she’d have thought she would’ve at least gotten more assignments, if not a better position. But what was she doing now? Standing around checking in the few refugees from Sub-Haranae.
Tavira probably should be thankful. She could’ve been assigned a desk job in Montreal.
Monty approached her. Tavira glances at her watch, “Wow, is it already 2:00?”
“Yes ma’am. Consider yourself relieved.”
“Thank goodness.”
She gave him a high five and began walking towards Delta’s unofficial “meeting area.”
Sitting there were Doc and Shrubdy. Both turned to... look at her? Tavira still hadn’t gotten used to working with a guy who always wore a hazmat suit, and especially not a sentient bush.
“How goes citizen watch?” Shrubdy asked.
“Boring as usual. How’s your morning been?”
“We’ve been keeping tabs on Sub-Haranae,” Doc deadpanned, “It is getting hairy down there.”
“And yet we still haven’t been called in,” Tavira grumbled. She sat down, “Where’s Rector?”
“Grey wanted to talk to you, but you weren’t available, so he went instead.”
“Oh fantastic! Of all of the people you could send to Grey, you sent Rector? He might-”
Before she could finish, Rector rounded the corner. He looked livid.
“No! With all due respect sir, I’d rather die than spend five minutes with him.”
Cyrus Grey, Diesel’s second in command, followed him. He looked even more livid. “Ore, this isn’t up for debate. Somebody has to escort him and you all are the only ones on staff.”
“No!”
Tavira stood and asked, “What‘s going on?”
“Ore is refusing an assignment.”
Rector crossed his arms, “The others will too. I guarantee you!”
Tavira held her hand up to shush him, “What’s the assignment?”
“Escorting prisoner 84 to a safe house.”
Doc said, “That would not be preferable.”
Shrubdy said, “Hard pass.”
Grey threw his hands up in exasperation.
“Who’s prisoner 84, and why are they causing my team to make STUPID DECISIONS?” The last part was yelled at the team, who shrunk away. “The prisoner used to be on Delta before he went rogue. They all have... history with him,” Grey answered. Rector scoffed, “That’s a stretch.”
“Quiet.”
Grey sighed, “I just need one person to escort him. The rest can clear the safe house for all I care.”
Tavira stood straight, “I’ll escort him. I’ve never met him before, so I’ll have no problems with him.”
Rector mumbled, “Oh he’ll make some problems.”
Tavira shot him a glare and he shut up.
Grey nodded, “Agreed. You will escort the prisoner. The rest will clear the safe house.”
Tavira saluted, “Yes sir!”
Before he walked away, Grey grabbed her arm and whispered, “This team’s feelings aside, this guy is bad news. A lot of people want him dead, and a lot of people want him alive. You’ll just be collateral damage. Be careful.”
“Yes sir.”
