“I heard the trunk door click open, and immediately I lunged foreword, grabbing the captains rifle with two hands, and propelling it up forcibly, into his jaw. The captain was the jolted backwards, and hit the ground hard. The combined trauma had left him unconscious.
Milliseconds later, 3 shots rang out from the back of the car. Brendon had extracted his revenge on the crimson-pauldroned brigand.
Flipping the captain’s rifle into my own possession, I turned off the safety and dispatched with the lone enemy in front of me as he drew a holstered pistol. Next, I suppressed the soldier operating the roadblock, forcing him to take cover behind a nearby concrete wall. As I closed the distance to the car in front of me, the soldier attempting to move it fled, and although I attempted to take him down, my rushed shots missed. I crouched behind the vehicle as the soldier at the gate opened fire on me, shattering the car’s windshield and sending fragments of metal and glass into the air. The shrapnel ricocheted harmlessly off my reinforced helmet.
I saw Brendon poke around the car we had been driving, and carefully aim his handgun at the gate guard, releasing a burst of lead that merited a short cry of pain from his target, followed by silence.
I heard a noise in the distance, glancing to the sky as two helicopters closed in on the checkpoint.
‘Let’s go!’ I shouted, ducking under the metal beam blocking the road. Brendon and I raced towards the safety of the tree-line.
I quickly glanced to my left, trying to spot the final USRC soldier. Not seeing him, I refocused on our escape, making my way to the tree line. Brendon was still a good bit behind me and to my right.
Suddenly, the air was pierced by the sound of a high caliber rifle, and the dirt a few inches from my feet exploded under the impact of a fin stabilized projectile. I slid behind a nearby tree as a second shot slammed into it, shattering any peace that remained in the cool morning air. Meanwhile, the approaching helicopters were beginning their descent.
I spotted Brendon, still off to my left, as he peeked out of his cover, firing a several rounds in the direction where I last saw our quarry. Suddenly, he stopped firing, returning to cover. He looked back at me and signaled that his munitions had run dry.
I was up.
Quickly, I peeked to the right, out of cover. I spotted the sniper, and began to raise my rifle, when I realized I was staring straight down the barrel of an anti-material rifles. It ducked back, as the tungsten arrow flew through the air, narrowly glancing off my composite reinforced helmet. A millimeter closer, and I would have been a dead man. My HUD went black, and my head was thrown to the left. Switching my rifle grip to the other hand, and dropping to one knee, I exposed myself from the other side of the tree, holding my breath. I aimed and released a burst in an instant, sending the sniper crumpling to ground.
I inhaled deeply, and the world erupted in an excruciating pain, I had collapsed.”
